After more than ten years off the air, HBO has announced it will be reviving Project Greenlight.
The show, a series that followed the challenges and triumphs of being a first time director, ran on HBO from 2001 to 2003, with a third season airing on Bravo in 2005. Original executive producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will be back on board for this iteration, as reported by Variety.
“Project Greenlight was ahead of its time,” said Affleck in a statement. “Now that technology has caught up to the concept, we thought it was a perfect time to bring it back. A whole new generation of filmmakers has grown up sharing everything, and the next big director could be just an upload away. It is really great having Project Greenlight back at HBO.”
“Project Greenlight works – careers have been launched and sustained as a direct result of this contest,” added Damon. “Pete Jones, John Gulager, Patrick Melton, and Marcus Dunstan are just a few of the PGL alums who’ve gone on to do great thins in Hollywood, and Ben and I are really proud of that.”
This news comes after the announcement of Starz ordering a similar series, according to Entertainment Weekly. The Chair from former Project Greenlight producer Chris Moore, will follow two directors bringing their first film to the big screen.
