How I Met Your Mother fans may finally get the happy ending that they wanted to see on Monday night. Co-creator and executive producer Carter Bays said that an alternate ending will be included on the DVD.
On Friday, Deadline reported that Bays and co-creator Craig Thomas did consider a different ending, although there was no details on this alternate ending. It’s possible that it is very similar to a YouTube fan-made video that circulated during the week that cut out the controversial final moment, when Ted revealed that the Mother died and he ran back to Robin. That was later taken down by CBS and producer 20th Century Fox TV.
That ending was actually filmed back in season two and Bays and Thomas apparently underestimated just how much audiences would like the Mother, played by Cristin Milioti. After all, back in season two, they didn’t know the show would last so long and didn’t even have a full picture for the Mother character.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Bays later took to Twitter, where he explained how the “magic of editing” helped them put together a different ending. Bays also said that the alternate ending is “very different.”
“We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it,” Bays wrote. “But we loved the other version too. We’re going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother.”
Bays also unveiled the legen - wait for it - dary packaging for the HIMYM DVD set.
