Hoping to make the semi-finals of the Davis Cup for the first time since 1981 Great Britain will again have to wait another year to accomplish that. Italy beat Great Britain 3-2 in the quarterfinal round Sunday.
Fabio Fognini proved to be the decisive victor upsetting the two-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. To clinch Italy’s spot in the semi-finals, Andreas Seppi then defeated James Ward 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. This will be the first time in 16 years that Italy for reached the semi-finals of the Davis cup.
Prior to falling to Fognini, Murray had defeated Seppi 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 before teaming up with Colin Fleming to win the doubles point taking a 2-1 lead over Italy.
Italy will now play either Switzerland or Kazakhstan in the semis in September.
As previously reported Kazakhstan leads 2-1 over Switzerland after winning the doubles point Saturday.
On the other half of the draw, the Czech Republic will play either Germany or France. Germany leads France 2-1 going into the reverse singles Sunday.
