Actor James Earl Jones is returning to Broadway in a new production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play You Can’t Take It With You, producers said Thursday.
Scott Ellis has been hired to direct the revival, reports The New York Times. It will be performed at a Shubert Theater that will be announced later and will start previews in August. Opening night is set for Sept. 28.
As Broadway.com notes, Jones has two Tony Awards on his resume, winning for Fences and The Great White Hope. He also scored nominations for One Golden Pond and The Best Man.
Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel are producing You Can’t Take It With You. Richards told the Times that the family at the center of the play will be multiracial.
You Can’t Take It With You was written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman and debuted in 1936. The most recent revival was in 1983 with Colleen Dewhurst, Elizabeth Wilson and Maureen Anderman.
The play was also the basis for Frank Capra’s Oscar winning 1938 film of the same name.
