Lara Spencer, who signed a new contract to stay with ABC News’ Good Morning America, is being rewarded for sticking around. She has just been promoted to co-host.
In a statement issued on the two-year anniversary of the first day GMA drew better ratings than NBC’s Today Show, ABC News President James Goldston announced Spencer’s promotion. She will continue to work with Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos, along with Amy Robach, who was picked to replace Josh Elliott.
Spencer began working with ABC in New York at WABC before joining GMA. She left, but re-joined the network in 2011. Last month, she signed a new contract to star on.
Since beating Today, GMA has actually been in a state of flux. First, meteorologist Sam Champion left for The Weather Channel, then Elliott took an opportunity at NBC Sports. Elliott insisted that his decision was not motivated by money, but a chance to go back to sports and possibly cover an Olympics. According to THR, he will make his NBC Sports debut at the Kentucky Derby.
