People Magazine has announced their choice for this year’s “50 Most Beautiful”: Lupita Nyong’o!
The magazine’s editorial director explained his choice on the Today show when he announced their pick saying, “There was really no contest this year. She seemed like the only choice. Usually there's a lot of debate; this time, we were all in agreement. She's obviously talented, obviously beautiful, she is incredibly stylish, but the way she carries herself with such grace and such humility, I think it's what put her over the top.”
Nyong’o herself went on to tell the magazine that she “never dreamed” she would’ve landed on such an iconic cover, especially having dealt with insecurities about her appearance when she was younger. She explains that she thought that to be beautiful, you must look like what you see on television. "Light skin and long, flowing, straight hair," she says. "Subconsciously you start to appreciate those things more than what you possess.” However, she also adds that her mother always told her she was beautiful anyway. “And I finally believed her at some point,” she says.
The 12 Years a Slave Oscar winner can currently be seen on-screen in the thriller Non-Stop but was very coy about any newer casting news in her interview with Today’s Savannah Guthrie.
