Oscar Pistorius broke down on the witness stand Tuesday as he described the moment he realized he fatally shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
NBC News reported that the Paralympian wept uncontrollably as he told the court that he smashed open the bathroom door with a cricket bat and found her inside.
CNN noted that the track star was heaving while testifying that Steenkamp was not breathing.
"I sat over Reeva and I cried,” he said sobbing.
Pistorius was so emotional during his testimony that Judge Thokozile Masipa adorned court and ended proceedings for the day.
The South-African sprinter is accused of murdering Steenkamp in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine’s Day 2013. The prosecution contends that Pistorius killed his girlfriend after the two had an argument. However, Pistorius maintains that he shot the model thinking she was an intruder. He has plead not guilty to murder and gun charges.
The trial is expected to continue till the middle of next month.
