Singer Paul Simon and his wife, singer Edie Brickell, appeared in a Norwalk, Connecticut courtroom Monday afternoon, holding hands and assuring the judge that they are not a danger to each other. The appearance came after the couple was arrested following an incident Saturday night.
Police were called to the couple’s New Canaan home at around 8 p.m. Saturday night. Police Chief Leon Krolikowski told The Hartford Courant that they had received a 911 hang-up call. He described the incident as a “minor physical altercation,” adding that there was “aggressiveness on both sides.”
Krolikowski said that Simon and Brickell were cooperative with the responding officers. They issued them a misdemeanor summons to appear in court after their arrests. “Under Connecticut law, we're obligated to make an arrest because it was domestic violence,” the police chief explained.
When the married couple of 22 years appeared in court Monday, they held hands and said it was an isolated incident. According to CNN, Simon told Norwalk Superior Court judge that they were going to their son’s baseball game after the hearing.
“Neither of us has any fear,” Simon told the judge. Brickell added later, “He's no threat to me at all.”
Simon, 72, and Brickell, 48, married in 1992 and have three children together. Brickell is best known for her time with the New Bohemians, while Simon is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer best known for his hits with Art Garfunkel and his solo career. Some of his best known songs include “The Sound of Silence” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
