A streak ended today sadly for Phil Mickelson that began little les than 20 years ago in 1997. On Friday, Mickelson failed to make the cut at the Masters by one stroke at five over.
“Why couldn’t I get it going? You know, I don’t really have a great answer for you. I’ve actually played reasonably well for the majority of the holes, and then the ones that I let slide I end up making a big number,” said Mickelson according to USA Today.
After getting a triple boogey at No. 7 on Thursday, Mickelson got his second triple boogey at the par-3 12th Friday causing for him to not make the cut reported The Washington Post.
Had Mickelson made the cut, this would have been his 17th consecutive showing at the Master’s, tying with Tiger Woods for the longest streak of an active player.
Instead both Mickelson and Woods will be missing the Augusta National this year marking the first time that neither of the two will play at a major since 2009.
Woods is currently recovering from back surgery on March 31.
After withdrawing from the Valero Texas Open due to a pulled muscle, Mickelson also skipped the Farmers Insurance Open because of a back injury. Mickelson has not won a tournament this year however this year marks the first year the three-time Masters champion won the green jacket at Augusta.
