Rob Lowe surprised a lot of people when he said in a recent interview that there is a bias against people who are extremely good looking.
Lowe, who will appear in the upcoming film Sex Tape, told New York Times that his good looks have stood in his way in his career.
“There’s this unbelievable bias and prejudice against quote-unquote good-looking people, that they can’t be in pain or they can’t have rough lives or be deep or interesting,” he explained. “They can’t be any of the things that you long to play as an actor. I’m getting to play those parts now and loving it. When I was a teen idol, I was so goddamn pretty I wouldn’t have taken myself seriously.”
He also talked about a “historical bias that good-looking people are not funny.”
ABC News reports Lowe also said the only reason he’s “cool” now is because he’s famous but as a teen he described himself as a “nerd” who liked the theater, studying and wanted nothing to do with sports.
Lowe details all of this in his second memoirLove Life.
