Switzerland will be playing in the semifinals of the Davis Cup this September after coming back from being down 1-2. Swiss, Roger Federer defeated Andrey Golubev to give Switzerland the 3-2 victory over Kazakhstan.
Federer beat Golubev 7-6 (0), 6-2, 6-3 Sunday securing his country’s team a spot in the semifinals for the first time in 11 years reported the Associated Press. After clinching the match, Federer ran to hug Severin Luethi, the team captain.
“We are very relieved and very happy. It was a long weekend with a lot of tennis,” said Federer.
As previously reported Federer and partner, Stanislas Wawrinka, lost in doubles Saturday to Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov, giving Kazakhstan a 2-1 lead. Earlier Wawrinka had lost his singles match as well.
Wawrinka was able to turn the events however when he defeated Mikhail Kukushkin 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, Sunday tying the score to leave room for Federer to secure their victory.
“Stan gave me the chance to play again today. It was a pleasure,” said Federer.
Switzerland will play Italy in September to determine who goes on to the finals of the Davis Cup.
