The reigning Australian Open champion and BNP finalist suffered a tough loss in doubles during the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup Saturday. Switzerland’s, Stanislas Wawrinka and Roger Federer were defeated 4-6, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-7(6) by Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan.
“Against those guys, you have to play almost the perfect match. I’m happy that we did today,” said Golubev, reported the Associated Press.
The loss came after Wawrinka was defeated in his singles match leaving Switzerland down 2-1 in the best of five match against the Kazakhs. After their loss against Kazakhstan in doubles, Switzerland has no room for error going into their reverse singles matches Sunday to determine which country continues to the semi-finals. No. 4 ranked Federer will take on No. 64 ranked Golubev while No.3 ranked Wawrinka plays No. 56 ranked, Mikhail Kukushkin, reported Reuters.
The Czech Republic is the only team to reach the semi-finals so far after defeating Japan, 3-0. Great Britain are looking to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1981 leading Italy 2-1. Germany currently has a 2-1 lead over France.
