Syfy announced on Friday that the network has greenlit the space opera The Expanse in a straight to series deal.
The network has committed to a 10-episode series as Syfy continues to search for new projects that are similar in scope to past series, such as Battlestar Galactica. The network retained the Children of Men screenplay duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby who wrote the pilot. They will stay with the series as writers and executive producers.
Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, who pitched the TV series idea, will also serve as executive producers.
The Expanse is based off of a series written by author James S.A. Corey and takes place a couple hundred years into the future. The show will focus on a detective and rogue ship captain who band together in the search of a missing woman and at the same time they stumble upon a gigantic conspiracy.
"'The Expanse' is epic in scale and promises to be Syfy's most ambitious series to date," Syfy President Dave Howe said. "Bringing this coveted book franchise to television with our partners at Alcon and the Sean Daniel Company is a giant win for Syfy, reinforcing our overall strategy to produce bold, provocative and compelling sci-fi fantasy stories."
The Expanse pick up follows a week after Syfy put in a series order for 13-episodes of a small-screen adaptation of 12 Monkeys, which stars Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull.
