SyFy is looking to the gods for its next scripted series, Olympus. The network put in an order for the 13-episode series on Monday.
Filming will start this summer in Vancouver and London so that it can premiere next year, reports The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported on the project. Casting has just started.
Olympus will tell the story of a young man named Hero who becomes a leader of a group banished to the Kingdom of Hades. His group goes face-to-face with the gods and miraculously wins.
The first part will be written and directed by Nick Willing, who previously worked with SyFy on Alice and Neverland. The executive producers include Willing, Robert Halmi Sr., Jim Reeve of Great Point Media and Reunion Pictures’ Matthew O’Connor and Lisa Richardson.
“I'm thrilled that the team of Willing, O'Connor and Halmi are together on another exciting Syfy project,” Halmi Sr. said in a statement. “With the success of Tin Man, Neverland and Alice, we are confident that this will be another epic adventure of television.”
“Olympus is a fantastic blend of action, intense thrills, creatures and great story telling. It will feature characters from mythology in a way never before imagined,” Chris Regina, Senior Vice President, Programming, Syfy, said in a statement. “It’s an excellent complement to our roster of programming and we can’t wait to share the adventures of Hero with the Syfy audience.”
SyFy has been working hard to get back into the respected sci-fi world. In March, the NBCUniversal-owned network ordered Ascension, their first miniseries since Alice. It was written by Smallville’s Philip Levens and will run six episodes. A 12 Monkeys series is also in the works.
