Syfy officially announced on Friday the network picked up their 12 Monkeys adaptation for a series order.

As previously reported, the network put in a pilot order back in August for an adaptation of the Terry Gilliam film 12 Monkeys, which came out in 1995 and starred Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.

The pilot episode of the hopeful Syfy series was written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett.

It took until April, for Syfy to finally decide to go ahead and order a full series for the project. The series will be 13 episodes and debut in January 2015, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Natalie Chaidez is on board as showrunner.

The series will follow the plot of the film with a man sent back into time to try and prevent a deadly plague from being released, which causes the destruction of nearly the entire human race. Aaron Stanford (Nikita) and Amanda Schull (Suits) will star in 12 Monkeys.

Another face from Nikita, Noah Bean, will co-star in the series, along with Fringe's Kirk Acevedo. Atlas' Richard Suckle and Jake Kurily will executive produce alongside Charles Roven, who was a producer of the Gilliam film.
