While the HBO show everyone is talking about today is Game of Thrones, the network is hoping that the conversation soon turns to The Leftovers. Before the fourth season of GoT started, HBO previewed the new series from Damon Lindelof.
The Leftovers is the first TV project from Lindelof since Lost ended. In the interim, the writer has worked on Star Trek Into Darkness and Prometheus. The new series is based on Tom Perrotta’s 2011 novel and the main stars are Justin Theroux and Liv Tyler.
The series starts with 2 percent of the world’s population suddenly disappearing. As the narrator in the teaser notes, it doesn’t sound like a lot, but that’s 140 million people suddenly nowhere to be found. From then on, those remain have to deal with the horror of having no explanation for the disappearances.
“Hopefully what you're going to care about when you watch the show more and more is how these characters are dealing with this situation in terms of living in this world and interacting with each other and less about about what happened and where everybody went and why,” Lindelof explained back in January at the Television Critics Association Press tour panel.
The Leftovers premieres on June 15 at 10 p.m.
