Utah Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin is the latest NBA coach to lose his job. The team announced on Monday that it won’t offer him a new contract.
According to the Associated Press, Corbin became the Jazz’s head coach in February 2011 after Jerry Sloan resigned. He was the Jazz’s assistant coach from 2004 to 2011. Corbin was the seventh head coach in Jazz history. He is the Jazz’s fourth coach since they moved to Utah in 1979.
“I would like to thank Ty and his staff for all of their hard work, dedication and professionalism over the last three-plus seasons,” Jazz General Manager Dennis Lindsey said. “This has not been an easy decision, but after a thorough review process, we as an organization feel that this is the best decision for our franchise moving forward.”
Corbin wasn’t just a coach, he was also a player. He played for nine teams in a 16-year NBA career that went from 1985 to 2001. He played for the Jazz for three seasons, from 1991-94.
“Ty represented himself and the Utah Jazz organization with great class and dignity, and he and his family have been an important part of our team and community for many years,” Jazz President Randy Rigby said. . “I want to thank them for their numerous contributions to this franchise and wish them well in the future. They will always remain a part of the Jazz family.”
In four seasons with the Jazz, Corbin had a 112-146 record, and had a winning record in two of his three full seasons, according to NBA.com. He also led them to a playoff appearance in 2012. This season the Jazz went 25-57 and failed to make the playoffs.This year was the Jazz's worst season since1979-80 when they went 24-58.
The Jazz will begin the search for their new coach immediately.
