Wolverine will see his last day in Death of Wolverine, a four-issue mini-series, reports Rolling Stone. In comic book time, Wolverine, also known as Logan, is over a century old.

“For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he’s been the eternal victor,” Marts, Marvel executive editor said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who’s been around for 100 years?”

The killing of such a major character, x-man, renegade and hero will act as a means to an end and most importantly represent closure. This summer, 3 Months to Die, will take readers through the death of Wolverine which will take place due to his loss of mutant healing. The tremendously effective power has kept him alive for over 100 years, with or without the major wounds he’s acquired.

The writers hope to give fans an ending to be happy with kill the character off in a way that was true to Wolverine.

“You’re gonna be entering into a world without Wolverine," says Marts. "That affects not only his teammates, but also the Marvel Universe at large. We’ve got a lot of things in the works already.”

Wolverine’s death will be a major loss to the Marvel community as a whole but his memory will live on through the countless stories he’s been a part of.

September 3rd will mark the beginning of the end for Wolverine with the release of the first issue while the final issue will come out on September 24th.
