As much as people would like to belittle Adam Sandler's recent movies in exotic locations but with little laughs and plot as just lush paid vacations, there is little denying that, if most of us were put in the same position, we wouldn't do the same thing.
When promoting his just-released Blended (see our review here) on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, when asked if "he is at a point in his life where you go, when you decide to go make a film, you say 'I want to go make this film somewhere where I can go on vacation?', Sandler didn't hesitate to say "yes."
In fact, he went as far as to say that he has been doing this ruse since 2004's 50 First Dates, where he was able to change the movie's location to Hawaii. Since then, he appears to just be banking on having some nice time outside the comforts of his L.A. home, as one would think from his decisions to return to Hawaii with Just Go With It and, most recently, Africa in Blended.
While it may be a bit disheartening for Sandler fans to hear that their star is blatantly just get a paid trip with his family for their hard-earned cash, one should consider that he does take the opportunity to make some art films, like the excellent Punch-Drunk Love, or even just the pretty good Reign Over Me and the refreshingly honest Funny People.
Also, considering that his next two films are Tom McCarthy's The Cobbler and Jason Reitman's Pale Blue Dot, previously called Men, Women and Children, at least he is still willing to push himself as a performer from time to time.
