A day after acquiring coveted wide receiver Sammy Watkins with the fourth pick in the NFL draft, the Buffalo Bills traded Stevie Johnson to the San Francisco 49ers.
ESPN first broke the news of a trade and both teams confirmed it on Friday.
Although the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, sources have said that the 49ers acquired Johnson for a conditional 2015 fourth-round pick that could become a third-rounder.
"Stevie was a great contributor during his career with our organization," Bills GM Doug Whaley said in a release. "Today's decision was not an easy one to make, especially involving a player like Stevie who leaves everything he has on the field and is an emotional leader in our locker room."
USA Today noted that the 27-year-old had a streak of three straight 70-catch, 1,000-yard seasons. However, his production declined in 2013 when he had 52 receptions for 597 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games.
The Bills had been shopping him leading up to the draft and after trading up to get Watkins, it was clear that the team was ready to move on.
After losing Mario Manningham in free agency, Johnson should fit in nicely as addition to the Niners receiving core that includes Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.
