California Chrome easily won Saturday at the Kentucky Derby and made his trainer the oldest to ever snag victory at the Derby.
According to The Associated Press, California Chrome managed to win by 1 3/4 lengths over the rest of the competition. Co-owner Steve Coburn said, "This is just a dream come true and a great birthday present." He turned 61 today.
The win was also great for Art Sherman, California Chrome's trainer, who is 59 years old. "He gave me the biggest thrill I ever had in my life."
The win had feel-good written all over it as California Chrome only needed to breed a $8,000 mare with a $2,500 stallion to get their race-winning horse, who was actually the 5-2 favorite at the race. The team's two owners are also more working class in comparison to most of the owners, who are usually quite rich.
Saturday was also good for other California Chrome co-owner Perry Martin as his wife, Denise Martin, won a claiming race at the Golden Gate Fields, reports SFGate. Their horse is named Captain Rodney.
Further connection between the two horses is that Captain Rodney's trainer is Sherman's son Steve Sherman, who actually was the one who got his father hired as California Chrome's trainer.
