The Indianapolis Colts received some bad news on Friday, outside linebacker Robert Mathis violated the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy and will be suspended for the first four games of next season.

In a statement the veteran player released to Ian Rapoport, he said the violation was due to fertility drugs, reports NFL.com and added that he should have looked into whether or not the drugs were OK to use.

Mathis said, "The union has worked very closely with me to present all of the facts and medical records for consideration of discipline that does not include a suspension because of the unique facts of my case, but the Commissioner refused the request."

According to ESPN, he was on the drug Clomid because he and his wife have "fertility challenges." Mathis noted that his doctor was wrong when he said the drugs would not be an issue.

Mathis also said in the statement, he and his wife were expecting a child, which his spokeswoman, Denise White, said was due to his mother being diagnosed with Stage 4 esophageal cancer and they wanted to have another child as soon as they could.
