Former motor racing champion Jack Brabham died on Monday at the age of 88.
BBC News reported that his son David confirmed that his father died at his home in Australia after a long battle with liver disease.
"He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of," he wrote on the family’s website. "He will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind."
Brabham began his motorsports career after serving as a Royal Australian Air Force mechanic.
His first race was in 1955 at the British Grand Prix. He went on to win championships in 1959, 1960 and 1966 when he won in a car he designed and engineered with his friend Ron Tauranac. The Aussie is the only person to have won the formula one world championship in his own car.
CNN noted that he retired from the sport in 1970.
The racing legend leaves behind his wife, Margaret, his three sons from a previous marriage and grandchildren.
