Actor and comedian Jim Carrey delivered a heartwarming speech at Maharishi University of Management in Iowa while receiving an honorary doctorate degree.
According to ACESHOWBIZ, Carrey spoke in front of 1,000 plus people including 285 graduates on Saturday, May 24 at the Golden Dome on the school’s Fairfield campus. Carrey shared a personal anecdote about how his father could have been a successful comedian but instead chose to go into accounting, a “safe” profession. However, his father lost his job when Carrey was 12 and the family had to do whatever they could to survive. His father’s failures are what he says inspired him to pursue a career as an entertainer.
"I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you could fail at what you don't love, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love,” he said. “Your job is not to figure out how it's going to happen for you, it's opening a door in your head, and when the door opens in real life, just walk through it.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maharishi University of Management was founded by transcendental mediation pioneer Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Carrey has reportedly attended several meditation retreats with the institution.
