With her daytime talk show Katie ending after just two seasons, it’s likely that she could re-join NBC’s Today show and reunite with former co-host Matt Lauer.
With co-anchor Savannah Guthrie five months pregnant, producers are scrambling to figure out the show’s next move.
Couric, 57, left the show back in 2006 and joined CBS Evening News, moving on to join ABC in 2011.
Insiders have told Daily News that Couric may not join the show in any official capacity but she might take over for Guthrie when she goes on maternity leave in late summer.
An NBC spokesperson said, “With the Today show in a good place, we are blessed with great talent and many options to temporarily fill Savannah’s chair while she’s on leave, but there’s no plan yet. Stay tuned.”
Other sources say the network is eyeing Meredith Vieira.
An insider explained, “If it could be worked out, it would make total sense for Katie or Meredith, two familiar faces for Today viewers. While this could make sense, it is just speculation, and there have not been any serious conversations about making it happen.”
