On Monday, the United States men’s national team coach selected a 30-man preliminary World Cup roster.
As USA Today reported, coach Jurgen Klinsmann included 18-year-old Julian Green, who separated his shoulder last month in an exhibition game and 20-year-old standout DeAndre Yedlin in his selections.
A big surprise for many was that D.C. United forward Eddie Johnson was not included in the group. Johnson scored a pivotal goal against Mexico in September to secure the U.S. another World Cup berth, the Associated Press noted.
"It was a very difficult decision based on what he's done with me the whole time," Klinsmann said about leaving him off the roster.
A notable inclusion to the 30-man roster is veteran Los Angeles Galaxy star and fan-favorite, Landon Donovan. If given a spot on the final roster as expected, this will be the 32-year-old's fourth World Cup.
Here how the current roster looks today:
Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Nick Rimando
Defenders: DaMarcus Beasley, Matt Besler, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Timmy Chandler, Brad Evans, Omar Gonzalez, Clarence Goodson, Fabian Johnson, Michael Parkhurst, DeAndre Yedlin
Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman Alejandro Bedoya, Michael Bradley, Joe Corona, Brad Davis, Mix Diskerud, Maurice Edu, Julian Green, Jermaine Jones, Graham Zusi
Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Terrence Boyd, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Aron Johannsson, Chris Wondolowski
On June 2, Klinsmann will have to dwindle it down to 23 players before heading to Brazil.
