Macklemore downplayed his choice of costume he wore onstage during a surprise Seattle performance this past Friday on Twitter on Monday, but he has now released a lengthy explanation for it on his website.
After wearing a fake nose and dark brown wig with a matching beard for his performance at Experience Music Project Museum, he wrote on Twitter it was just a “random costume.”
Now, he writes on his website that the costume is “misunderstood.”
“Disguise was the intention. I personally thought I looked very ambiguous in terms of any “type” of person. Some people there thought I looked like Ringo, some Abe Lincoln. If anything I thought I looked like Humpty Hump with a bowl cut,” he wrote.
He also wrote, “I wasn’t attempting to mimic any culture, nor resemble one. A 'Jewish stereotype' never crossed my mind.”
Macklemore ended the post saying he “truly apologizes” for anyone who took it the wrong way and he will “let my body of work and the causes for which I’ve supported speak for themselves.”
