There will be another cold weather Super Bowl sooner rather than later. Minneapolis will host the 2018 Super Bowl in the new stadium being built for the Minnesota Vikings.
The NFL made the decision on Tuesday, following presentations from Minneapolis and the other two finalists - New Orleans and Indianapolis - in Atlanta. New Orleans has hosted the game 10 times in the past and Indianapolis just hosted the game in 2012.
According to the Star Tribune, it took the NFL owners four ballots to decide on Minneapolis, which needed 75 percent of the vote to earn the game.
Minneapolis was represnted by a team that included U.S. Bancorp CEO Richard Davis and Carlson Cos. Board Chair Marilyn Carlson Nelson.They also enlisted skier Lindsey Vonn, Vikings runningback Adrian Peterson and others for a video presentation. Their theme was “Built for the Bold” and they pledged to build an ice castle in St. Paul
“We just are thrilled,” Carson Nelson told the Star Tribune. “Tell everybody to come!”
Super Bowl LII will be held in a stadium that hasn’t even opened yet. According to USA Today, the $1 billion stadium will open in fall 2016. In the meantime, the Vikings will play at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota for the next two seasons.
Minneapolis’ Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome hosted the 1992 Super Bowl game, with the Washington Redskins beating the Buffalo Bills.
