NBC has renewed Law & Order: SVU for a 16th season. The deal comes after some behind the scenes interactions with executive producer Dick Wolf.

Variety reported that the last few seasons of Law & Order had solid ratings and the show has been receiving renewed Emmy buzz surrounding lead actress Mariska Hargitay.

The show has averaged 8.4 million viewers, which is a 16% increase over last season. The police crime drama has had a large and dedicated fan base.

The 16th season of the show will be featuring the return of Hargitay. The show was likely to become an instant renewal but financial issue complicated what would have been a simple renewal from Universal TV , USA Today added.

It is not clear how both parties came to an agreement, it was rumored that Wolf, had to take a salary cut, but that has not been confirmed.

Warren Leight is to remain as the main showrunner and executive producer of SVU with Wolf, Julie Martin, Jonathan Starch and Peter Jankowski.
