Martin St Louis led the New York Rangers to victory with his goal 6:02 into overtime at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. The Rangers now lead the Canadiens 3-2 in the Eastern Conference series.
Carl Hagelin put the Rangers in the lead with a short-handed goal in the first period. Derick Brassard scored in the second period to make the score 2-1.
St Louis’ game-winning goal was his sixth goal of the playoffs. Assisted by forwards Carl Hagelin and Brad Richards, St Louis fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Montreal’s goaltender Dustin Takarski. The Times Columnist Times Columnist reports that Montreal’s Takarski said, “"St. Louis had some time and picked a corner on me. It's a game of inches, and we came up a bit short."
Rangers’ forward Beniot Pouliot’s penalty put Montreal on a power play during overtime, but the Rangers didn’t allow them to use this to their advantage. Rangers defenseman Marc Staal told NHL News, NHL News “Your stomach turns a little bit when you take a penalty in overtime any time. It gives them that advantage, and it’s a big advantage in overtime.”
This was goal tender Henrik Lundqvist’s 41st postseason win. He made 27 saves, and earned an assist on Derick Brassard’s second period goal.
Game 5 of the series is scheduled for Thursday at 8 p.m.
