Oscar Pistorius’ psychiatrist testified on Monday that the athlete has suffered from an anxiety disorder since he was a child and was anxious the night he shot Reeva Steenkamp.
CNN reported that Dr. Meryl Vorster said that the Paralympian’s anxiety stemmed from his double amputation as an infant and his unstable parents.
BBC News noted that Vorster told the court that Pistorius’ actions on Valentine's Day last year “should be seen in context of his anxiety.”
She went on to say that the track star was sorry for what happened that day and now suffers from depression because of it.
"He is certainly remorseful about the events... and has developed a depressive disorder as a consequence of this."
The 27-year-old is accused of intentionally killing Steenkamp after the two had an argument. However, he contends that he shot his model girlfriend through a bathroom door after mistaking her for an intruder.
He has plead not guilty to murder and weapons charges.
