After a 17-day hiatus, the Oscar Pistorius murder trial has resumed and picked up right where it left off.
The Associated Press reported that on Monday, Pistorius’ neighbor, Johan Stander, testified that he believed the Paralympian shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, by mistake due to his emotional state.
"His commitment to save the young lady's life -- when he put his finger in the young lady's mouth... how he begged her to stay alive.... I saw the truth that morning. I saw it. And I feel it," he said.
CNN noted that Stander was the first person Pistorius called after he shot the model. He went to say that the double-amputee runner was "praying, crying,” and “torn apart," after the shooting.
Pistorius is on trial for the murder of Steenkamp, who he shot to death on Valentine’s Day 2013.
Prosecutors believe that the athlete intentionally shot her after the two had a fight early that morning. However, Pistorius contends that he only shot Steenkamp after mistaking her for an intruder in his home.
He has plead not guilty to murder and weapons charges.
