Michael Sam has made history being the first openly gay football player to be drafted into the NFL. Sam who played for the University of Missouri was recently drafted by the St. Louis Rams. In light of this history making venture, OWN has ordered a documentary series that will focus on Sam's personal story.
Variety reported that this untitled project will be focusing on Sam's journey while he was preparing to enter into the NFL. Cameras will follow him and fans can see him earn a starting spot on the Rams while dealing with scrutiny from the media and others because of his professional and personal life.
Oprah Winfrey spoke out about working on this doc series and what OWN is trying to show with this untitled project. "We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever. I am proud of the focus on authentic storytelling in our new documentary series format. The next real-life story we follow in ‘The Untitled Michael Sam Project’ promises to spark valuable, important discussion on life in America today. Craig Piligian and director Amy Rice, who were behind Lindsay Lohan's documentary which aired on OWN, will produce this project as well, The Hollywood Reporter added.
