Charlotte Mecklenburg police say that Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy was arrested on misdemeanor charges of assault and communicating threats.

Early Tuesday morning police were called to a residence and a woman there said the Pro Bowl player threatened and assaulted her, reports the Charlotte Observer. The 24-year-old said she had been in a relationship with the 25-year-old DE since late last year.

The Panthers released a statement saying, "We are very disappointed to learn of the allegations involving Greg and are concerned for all parties as we continue to investigate."

Hardy was checked into jail after going before a judge, who denied him bond. Julia Rush, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office, said that is normal in domestic violence cases. The suspect is usually kept in jail for a day, which is known as a "cooling-off period."

According to The Associated Press, Hardy, who has had 26 sacks between the past two seasons, recently signed the franchise tag tender. He will make $13.116 million for the upcoming season.
