The New York Rangers advance to their first Stanley Cup Finals since 1994, when they won the title. In game six of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Rangers blanked the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 to close out the series.
The lone goal of the game was scored by New York center Dominic Moore with two minutes left in the second period. Center Brian Boyle and defenseman Ryan McDonagh recorded assists on the play.
The Rangers’ defense was spectacular, holding the Canadiens to 18 shots. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist was perfect, saving every shot that made its way to him.
Montreal rookie goalie Dustin Tokarski recorded 31 saves on 32 Ranger shots.
Neither team had success on the power play. The Rangers were 0-for-4, while the Canadiens were unsuccessful on both of their power plays, according to ESPN.
The Rangers advance to their first Stanley Cup Finals in 20 years.
“We’re proud and thrilled that we’ve gone this far,” Mark Stall said in his postgame press conference on blueshirtsunited.com. “But in the back of our minds that focus is going to be next round. We’ve got to keep playing.”
New York will match up with either the Chicago Blackhawks or the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings and Blackhawks are the two most recent Stanley Cup Championships and have won three of the last four titles. Los Angeles leads the Western Conference Finals 3-2, and game six is Friday night.
Game one of the Stanley Cup Finals will be on June 4.
