The Texas Rangers could be without first baseman Prince Fielder for the rest of the season as he is scheduled to have neck surgery on Tuesday.
Fielder is expected to undergo a cervical fusion based off the recommendation of Dr. Drew Dossett, though general manager Jon Daniels said the team will still seek out a second opinion, reports The Associated Press. The baseball player is suffering from a herniated disc.
The recovery time following the fusion is about three to four months, according to CBS Sports, eliminating just about any chance Fielder could return in time to finish out the season.
The 30-year-old has struggled through the season, averaging .247/.360./.360 with only three homeruns and 16 RBIs. Fielder had a nerve-root injection the previous week, but it didn't help him much.
The Rangers will have 14 players on the disabled list once Fielder is added, which also ends his streak of 547 consecutive played games. Texas picked up Fielder in a trade with Detroit for second baseman Ian Kinsler. Fielder's contract extends to 2020 and will make the first baseman $24 million a year.
