The Boston Red Sox entered their four-game series with the Atlanta Braves having lost their last 10 games. The Red Sox turned their fortune around and have taken the first three games of the series.
They won games one and two in Atlanta by scores of 8-6 and 6-3. For the final two games of the series, the two teams moved to Fenway Park, where the Red Sox shut the Braves out 4-0 in game three.
Boston starter John Lackey picked up his sixth win of the year, going 6 1/3 innings while striking out nine and giving up eight hits.
The Red Sox got on the board in the second inning when left fielder Jonny Gomes scored on a ball hit by first baseman Daniel Nova that ended up leading to double play. Boston tacked on another run in the third on an RBI single by catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
In the sixth, Boston center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a double to left that scored Gomes and put runners on second and third with one out. The Red Sox failed to plate any more runs in the inning, as right fielder Grady Sizemore got out at home on a fielder’s choice and shortstop Xander Bogaerts struck out.
In the following frame, Gomes smacked an RBI base hit to left to give the Red Sox their fourth run of the game. They then got the bases loaded, but pinch hitter Ryan Lavarnway grounded into a double play to end the inning, according to ESPN .
Gomes finished with two hits, two runs and one RBI.
“I just run it out there and any way I can generate a run on the board and hopefully take one off on defense, that’s what I’m going to do,” Gomes said in an article on bostonglobe.com .
The Red Sox, who are 23-29, will look to finish off the four-game sweep of the NL-East-leading Braves on Thursday night.
