Rutgers quarterback Philip Nelson has been dismissed from the football program, the school announced on Tuesday. Nelson was charged in connection with an assault in Minnesota.
Nelson reportedly kicked Isaac Dallas Kolstad, 24, a former Minnesota State linebacker, in the head after someone had punched Kolstad as bars were closing on Sunday. Witnesses said that Nelson was upset because of the attention his girlfriend was getting. He was charged with two counts of felony assault on Monday, according to the Associated Press. He was released from jail on bail on Monday. Surveillance cameras captured the incident.
''Nelson pushes past others, approaches I.K. and delivers at least one kick to the left side of I.K.'s head,'' a criminal complaint reads.
After the 2013 season Nelson transferred to Rutgers from Minnesota. In 12 games last year he threw for 1,306 yards, according to CBS Sports. HE also threw for nine touchdowns and ran for 364 yards. Nelson announced that he would transfer in January. After sitting out next season he would have two years of eligibility left.
''The Rutgers football family's thoughts and prayers are with Isaac Kolstad and his family,'' Rutgers head football coach Kyle Flood said.
Kolstad’s family issued a statement on Monday saying they appreciate the support. Kolstad had played for Mankato East, North Dakota State, and Minnesota State.
