The San Diego Padres aren’t that great a team and have not gotten off to a good start this season. So, in an effort to get people in the stands, they have to get creative. That includes getting a dinosaur - yes, a dinosaur - to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Before the start of Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, a baby Tyrannosaurus rex threw the pitch to the Padres’ mascot. Surprisingly, the pitch almost made it to home plate, although the dinosaur wasn’t actually standing on the mound.
Dinosaurs did go extinct 65 million years ago, but puppeteers bring them to life in the Walking With Dinosaurs show that is touring North America. It wasn’t actually a reenactment of the scene in The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
This isn’t the first time that the Padres have been creative with a first pitch. A few years ago, a Cirque du Soleil performer spun in the air as he delivered the pitch.
In case you are wondering if the dinosaur helped the Padres win, it did not. The team was shut out 8-0 by the Royals and their record stands at 15-20, just over a month into the season.
