The saga continued this week as San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced his bid against Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in finding a location for the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum, a project currently in development by Star Wars mastermind George Lucas.
Reuters reports that Lee’s announcement follows a failed February proposal by Lucas to buy an eight acre spot on the northern San Francisco Peninsula from Presidio Trust. Described as a “dedication to cultural fantasy,” the coveted museum will showcase 10,000 pieces of artwork from artists like Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish. Emanuel expressed his interest back in April after he named members of a site selection task force.
Lee released in a statement, "I strongly agree with the many educators, business leaders, parents and families who have expressed their concern to me that we must not squander this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our city and region."
According to the SF Gate, one place in consideration is Piers 30-32 of the Bay area, after the departure of former developers the Golden Gate Warriors. President of the Port Commission Leslie Katz stated, "It's certainly something worth exploring, and I'm sure we will.”
Lucas already promised to invest $700 million for the museum’s construction.
