Next month’s US Open will go on without golf’s most recognizable star. Tiger Woods announced on his website that he will miss the year’s second major.
He cited his recovery from a back surgery at the end of March for the reason for the scratch. This injury also kept him out of this year’s Masters, which took place in early April.
"Unfortunately, I won't be there because I'm not yet physically able to play competitive golf," he said on tigerwoods.com. "I'd like to convey my regrets to the USGA leadership, the volunteers and the fans that I won't be at Pinehurst.”
Woods, who has won 14 major championships, has missed five other major championship tournaments since turning pro. Two came in 2008, following his victory at the US Open (his last major title). In 2011, he sat two majors out due to injury.
He last played golf competitively at the on March 9 at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. He carded a 66 in third round of the tournament.
"There's no date, there's no timetable, just taking it day by day and just focusing on trying to get stronger and come back," Woods said at Congressional Country Club on May 19 in article on ESPN.com.
Woods, who sits in second place on the all-time leaders for major championships behind Jack Nicklaus, will hopefully get another crack at capturing his 15th major championship at the Open Championship in July.
