For the past five seasons of the Fox show, Glee, we have seen many of the characters moving forward to achieve their dreams. One such person is Kurt Hummel, the boy with the golden voice, who has gone through many hardships in his life in order to find his rise to stardom.
Kurt Hummel is played by Chris Colfer, who has already written three books, has a fourth book due to come out, wrote and starred in the movie Struck By Lightning, and has now even added a writing credit to the show he is on. This is quite an achievement for the young star, who turns 24 at the end of this month.

Knowing Chris, this is bound to be an episode full of amazing songs and great writing.

10. Rose’s Turn
In this season one episode where the song is from, Kurt has been feeling neglected by his dad. After spending time with his new girlfriend’s son, Finn Hudson, Burt has inadvertently left Kurt feeling left out, and he sings this powerful song to express his emotions. This showcases the vocal range Kurt has and also proves he has an amazing stage presence.

9. As If We Never Said Goodbye
This season two song comes during the time when Kurt returns to McKinley High School, after receiving a death threat from a student. Kurt has made his triumphant return to his school, after his friends have vowed to be there for him and protect him, especially his new brother, Finn. Kurt sings this song through the halls of his school, before ending it in the auditorium, surrounded by all of his friends. The video below is sideways, but it shows the full scene of his performance.

8. I’m The Greatest Star
This song is from season 3 when Kurt auditions for the role of Tony in the school production of West Side Story. In an amazing performance, Kurt shows he is perfect for the stage and that he is a great performer. Plus, he does some amazing tricks with sai swords. Fun fact: Chris Colfer has been using sai swords for years, so this was a nice addition to see for Kurt’s audition. Unfortunately, while Kurt lost out on the role of Tony (a decision I still think is unjust), this performance shows that Kurt is, indeed, the greatest star.

7. Defying Gravity
This next song is not only one that Kurt loved, but so did Chris. He was never given the chance to sing this song in high school, so Glee creator Ryan Murphy wrote it in for Chris. In the episode, Kurt and fellow rival, Rachel Berry, have a ‘diva off’ to see who should sing the song for an audition. What ends up happening is Kurt flubs the high F because he doesn’t want his dad to receive any more calls about his gay son. Another three letter used was used in the episode, in a scene where we see Burt looking stricken. To protect his dad, Kurt flubs the note, a point he would later on bring up to Rachel during a fight in season four. The video below is the version of “Defying Gravity” where we hear Kurt singing by himself.

6. Le Jazz Hot
In season 2 one episode centered on the Glee club doing duets with one another. Originally, Kurt asked new kid Sam Evans to do a duet with him, which Sam had agreed on. However, due to pressure from Finn over Sam being given a hard time if he sings with a dude, Kurt breaks off the duet. After breaking it off, he proceeds to do an amazing rendition of the song “Le Jazz Hot” from Victor/Victoria.

5. I Wanna Hold Your Hand
One of the most heartbreaking songs to ever come out of Kurt’s lips, this song appears in an episode where Kurt’s dad has suffered a heart attack. Kurt, who already lost his mother at a young age, is scared of losing his dad, and he sings this song about wanting to hold his dad’s hand. The scene intercuts with flashbacks of a young Kurt and his father. This song is slow, poignant, and beautifully done.

4. I Have Nothing
In an episode focused on a tribute to Whitney Houston, Kurt sang “I Have Nothing” to his boyfriend, Blaine. This song showcases Kurt’s amazing vocal abilities and he really hits you in the gut with his facial expressions and the look of pure passion in his eyes.

3. Being Alive
In season four, Kurt is focused on making it in New York, and taking another shot at his audition for the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts. Having not been accepted at the end of his high school year, Kurt makes another attempt during a winter performance, where he once again shows his amazing vocal talents. With only his hands at his side and surrounded by an audience, including his friend Rachel, Kurt sings his heart out and proves he can shine on the stage.

2. I’m Still Here
In season five, Kurt was the victim of a vicious hate crime after coming to the rescue of another gay man. He sings this song with such heart, showing that despite all of the hardships he has gone through, he is still standing.

1. Not The Boy Next Door
Number one on our list comes from season 3 and this was Kurt’s audition to get into NYADA. He does an amazing job on the stage, from playing the piano to bending his body backwards during a portion of the song. The song showcases his amazing vocal range and the outfit he wears only lends credit to his attractive form during the performance.
