Valerie Harper, Kellie Pickler raise awareness about lung cancer

Actress Valerie Harper and country singer Kellie Pickler have a common goal, to spread awareness about lung cancer.

Fox News reported that the duo is focusing on spreading awareness for how lung cancer impacts women. They have teamed up to work with the American Lung Association's new program, Lung Force.

Harper was diagnosed with lung cancer back in 2009 and was told that she hold had a few months to live, CBS News reported. Now a year later Harper is ready to help spread the word about this growing disease.

The two stars both share a passion for raising awareness about the risks of lung cancer for women. They teamed up at the launch of American Lung Association's new program, Lung Force, on Tuesday.

Harper spoke out during a recent interview about what drew her into the cause. "Lung cancer is the No. 1 [cancer] killer of women… I think that people are distancing themselves from lung cancer by saying, 'Oh, I don't smoke,' [but] that's a lie," said Harper. "It's a wonderful new initiative."

The "Red High Heels" singer echoed the statements made by her partner saying that this was a cause that was very close to her heart and she really wanted to get involved to help spread the word.
