Joe Torre’s place in New York Yankees history has already been cemented, but the team has decided to set his legacy in stone. The former manager will have his number 6 retired by the team.
Torre is only the third manager in Yankees history to have his uniform number retired. Casey Stengel, who won seven World Series with the team, had his No. 37 retired and Billy Martin’s No. 1 is also retired.
The Yankees will hold the official retirement ceremony at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 23.
Back in December, Torre was one of three new managers selected to join the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Tony La Russa and Bobby Cox joined Torre.
During his time as Yankees manager, the team won four World Series championships and six American League pennants.
Soon, the Yankees will have no single-digit numbers remaining. After Torre’s No. 6 is retired, Derek Jeter’s No. 2 will be the only single-digit left. This is Jeter’s last season and he is a shoe-in to have his number retired.
The Yankees also announced plans to honor Tino Martinez and Goose Gossage on Old Timers’ Day weekend in June with Monument Park plaques. Paul O’Neill will also be honored on Aug. 9.
