Pretty Little Liars returned strong in the television ratings on Tuesday night for the ABC Family's drama's fifth season.
The season premiere episode topped all scripted TV for the night in the Women 18-34 demographic with a 2.8 rating. PLL also pulled in a 2.0 rating in the network's desired 12-34 demo and a 3.5 rating in females 12-34.
The drama, largely competing on the night against the Game 3 of the NBA Finals airing on ABC, also managed to snag a 1.1 rating in the advertiser-important 18-49 demo and averaged the best overall audience for a scripted cable series with 2.7 million tuning in for the show's return, which is an improvement over the fourth season's average of 2.4 million viewers.
The show also performed strong on Twitter and Instagram, much like it always does, with "EscApe From New York" one of the five most-talked about original episodes for any television show of the year, with the episode managing to pull in over 1 million tweets.
Ahead of Tuesday night's return to television for the drama series' fifth season, ABC Family announced that PLL would be returning for a sixth and seventh season.
Much like Tuesday's success both in the ratings and on social media, the popular series has done well through the previous four seasons, managing strong performances in the network's key demos.
