Adam Levine has one message for the world right now and it is this, “You don’t have to like me, but I’d prefer it if you did.”

There are several things that come to mind when the name ‘Adam Levine’ is mentioned and some of the more constant words may be ‘cocky’, ‘player’ and ‘douchebag’. At least that is what Hollywood thinks as the Maroon 5 frontrunner claims when speaking with GQ magazine for the July issue.

When speaking with GQ, Levine frankly asked, “What is a douchebag?” resulting in his self contemplation to later say, “Maybe I am, I don’t know.” The 35-year-old entertainer has been all over the place since his initial rise to fame back in 2005 as Us Weekly recounts his music success, being a face for Proactiv, created his own fragrance, joined The Voice and entertained a wide array of women. Let’s also not forget his time spent on American Horror Story.

Levine tells GQ that perhaps he is misunderstood because of the characteristics of a douchebag, which he believes to be lack of self-awareness, conceitedness, and insecurity, or masking insecurity with too much of it. He defends himself by saying when others may think of him as conceited, he considers himself to be cocky as “Cocky is playful.” Also his cockiness is confidence. “Some people don’t like confidence. They resent confidence.”

On the topic of his love life, he has been engaged to Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinslo and despite dating other models in the past, E Online quotes Levine that he doesn’t, “date what the person does. I date the f—cking person.” In addition he criticizes others women who date men for money implying that everyone does what they do for a reason.

Levine has an upcoming film with Keira Knightley titled Begin Again coming into theatres June 27th. Most recently on the Today Show where co-host Savantha Guthrie spoke to Levine and recounted that Knightley felt he played a jerk well, reports Us Weekly. The singer’s responded by laughing it off with a, “Thank you? I’m hoping she meant that in the best way possible.”
