All-star infielder Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles was benched due his lack of production as of late. Davis has a batting average of just .216 with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs this season. In his last 14 games, he has only hit for an average of .130, slumping with seven hits out of his past 54 at bats. He cannot seem to get a grip of what has gone on with his lack of production.
"I'm trying to figure it out. I know it's frustrating for people to watch me go through it, but can you imagine how much more frustrating it is to actually go through it? At the same time, we still have a lot of baseball left to play and I know I'm going to get an opportunity to come out of it. I know I'll come out of it," said Davis, reported by ESPN.
The slugger wants to produce badly for his team. However, he understands his manager’s decision in benching him. Davis agrees players should earn their spot out on the baseball field. He wants to be one of those players really soon.
“You’ve got to earn the right to play. [It] doesn’t matter how much money you are making, or how much success you’ve had in the past, if you are not doing your job. You have to put the best nine out there, and I understand that. I would just like to be a part of that nine,” said David, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Not many people including Davis himself expected him to get off to this ruff a start this season. Last year Davis had a monster season leading the major leagues with 53 homeruns and producing 138 RBIs as well. The Orioles first basemen has plenty of baseball left to play this season to make up for his lack of production.
