Boy Meets World was a beloved family favorite ‘90s television show following the lives of youngsters as they matured over the years and picked up a couple of life lessons along the way. Ben Savage (Cory) and Danielle Fishel (Topanga) were the show’s crown jewels, portraying the trials and tribulations of young love and winning over the hearts of viewers from all over the world.
Now the two actors are back for more, but with one big change—they’re playing parents.
Girl Meets World centers around Topanga and Cory’s child, Riley Matthews, as the family lives in New York City.
Savage talked to The Hollywood Reporter about how much the show meant to young people fourteen years earlier and how this idea encouraged him to take on his role once again.
“…People grew up with the show and they have their own families [now]. That’s really special to us. You forget — we’re in L.A. and we’re working — that the show had such an important impact on people,” Savage said. “I’m not saying it’s the most important thing, but in this life and in this world, if you can have any sort of positive influence on someone’s life, it means a lot — even if it’s to make them laugh for a few minutes every day.”
Fishel also talked about the widespread love of Boy Meets World in a new interview with People. She understands that her character meant a great deal to fans. "The name Topanga will stick with you. For seven years, and for, I guess, now 21 years, I've been in people's living rooms as Topanga,” Fishel said. “That's what makes sense – it doesn't bother me at all."
As for her take on Girl Meets World, she says, “It’s a show I’m proud of.” The show premieres at 9:45 PM EST on Disney Channel.
