Cartoon Network announced on Monday that the network would be reviving The Powerpuff Girls after the special proved popular in January.The network aims to air the rebooted series beginning in 2016.
"The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide," Chief Content Officer Rob Sorcher said. "We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugr, spice and Chemical X."
Cartoon Network Enterprises Vice President of Consumer Products for North America Pete Yoder said that the franchise's brand continues to prove popular all across the world and the network wanted to bring the popular characters of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup back for "a new generation."
Yoder said, "With proven success and great content plans in place, there's so much potential that we're looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks."
The Powerpuff Girls was created by Craig McCracken and debuted in 1998. The original cartoon series lasted 78 episodes and spawned a 2003 feature film, on top of a 10th anniversary special and the January special.
