Conan O’Brien is speaking out about owing almost $10,000 in back taxes on his family’s Rhode Island home, saying the money he owed was just a misunderstanding.
The Conan host paid the $8,000 he owed in back taxes on Monday, but he said that if he only knew that he owed it then it would’ve been paid a lot sooner than that.
O’Brien said he had no idea he owed money on the home and that he only found out through a reporter from The Westerly Sun.
“As soon as I was made aware that the tax bill on my parents' house was being mailed to the wrong address, I paid the bill immediately. The problem has been corrected. I am grateful to the reporter at the Westerly Sun who spotted this error and notified me,” he told Us Weekly.
Had O’Brien not paid the money owed on the house, it would’ve went up for auction on Tuesday. The home is valued at $722,900 and in his parents’ name.
As we previously reported, O’Brien’s rep called it an “clerical error” that the bill did not arrive at the right location, since his accounting firm moved locations.
